Nuclear Lead-Lined Flasks for Decommissioning, Containment & Waste Disposal

It is difficult to build radiographically sound waste containers that are capable of safely transporting and storing various contaminated components used in a Candu Reactor.

Containers must be built in a way to completely shield the materials inside, protecting personnel tasked with handling the containers. Working with the customer, we were able to provide a safely manufactured solution using the following process:

  • Specifications were provided by the customer including drawings
  • After flasks were manufactured, lead was poured into the voids
  • Integrity testing was performed for all welds, lifting lugs, and lead dispersion.

Safe Waste Shipping & Storage: Nuclear Lead-Lined Flasks

Shielding containers needed to be manufactured to safely hold radioactive waste for shipment and storage. The containers needed to have lifting points and these needed to be load tested to ensure integrity.

Welds must be executed so they are mechanically sound as well as air-tight. This is because, after fabrication, the internal passages of the waste containers are filled with molten lead, which solidifies, providing the required radiation shielding. This is verified via a radiograph test after the lead pour.

The completed nuclear lead-lined flasks (waste containers) are Load Tested to ensure they can be lifted and handled safely in the plant as well as transported on the road.
