Rotor Tipping Upending Fixture

Heavy material handling of a rotor needs to be precise, especially when taking a rotor from the horizontal to vertical position and vice versa.

The fixture was designed to receive a range of rotor sizes and weights with the use of sleeves that are inserted as part of the clamping mechanism.
This assembly platform was designed and built in Hamilton, Ontario, and shipped to Dammam, Saudi Arabia for assembly in Siemens’ new gas turbine assembly facility.
A fixture (fixed on the concrete floor) was designed to clamp a rotor and, with the aid of an overhead crane at the other end, the rotor could be rotated from horizontal to vertical position and vice versa.

Rotor Tipping Fixture Built for Flexible Support in Handling Heavy Materials

This assembly platform was designed and built in Hamilton, Ontario, and shipped to Dammam, Saudi Arabia for assembly in Siemens’ new gas turbine assembly facility. The rotor tipping fixture allows the 190,000lbs turbine rotor to go from the horizontal position to the vertical position or vice versa. The casing split joint of the turbine from the top of the structure. Designed to fixture and tip six different turbine rotor designs, the rotor tipping fixture is used in the manufacture of gas turbines.

Outcome: Project was completed safely, on time, on budget, and to specification conforming to contract requirements and with good workmanship.

Highlights: Demonstrates ability to analyze requirements of the turbine assembly process, perform design and structural engineering and follow through with fabrication and installation. A fully detailed operations manual was also provided.
