Modular Platform Design For Severe Spatial Constraints
In environments where safety and efficiency are paramount, addressing accessibility challenges is critical. Unified Engineering excels in designing innovative solutions for complex spatial and ergonomic constraints. Our expertise in modular platform systems ensures compliance with rigorous safety standards while providing practical and adaptable solutions. In this project, we tackled the hazards of obstructed mechanical rooms by delivering a walkover platform system that balances functionality, safety, and ease of installation. This case exemplifies our ability to transform hazardous environments into safe and efficient workspaces.
The Challenge:
Maintenance in a hospital’s mechanical room was hindered by safety hazards and ergonomic challenges. Pipes obstructed access to critical systems, and makeshift walkways lacked stability, level surfaces, and safety features like handrails, posing risks of accidents. Additionally, these temporary solutions damaged pipe insulation, increasing maintenance issues. The spatial constraints of the mechanical room made designing a permanent, safe, and efficient solution particularly difficult.

The Solution:
Unified Engineering developed a modular platform system tailored for severe spatial limitations. These walkover platforms and handrails comply with Ontario Building Code (OBC) safety standards while ensuring easy installation and adaptability. Lightweight, one-piece metal plank grating addressed weight and compression concerns. Relief gaps in handrails accommodated obstructive pipes, while vertical supports ensured lateral load compliance. Iterative design refinements resulted in modular walkway sections with enhanced rigidity, and experimental designs identified optimal modular stringer geometries for stairs, meeting code requirements and spatial challenges.
The Benefit:
The modular walkover bridges and stairs provide a safe, ergonomic solution for maintenance staff, reducing risks of accidents and improving accessibility in the mechanical room. By preventing damage to pipe insulation and adhering to building codes, the platforms ensure long-term operational efficiency. The modular design allows for easier installation in tight spaces and adaptability to various configurations, enhancing the overall safety and functionality of the hospital’s maintenance operations.
