These flasks, weighing up to 18,000 lbs., must traverse narrow spaces, tight turns, and slopes, while also being lifted vertically with precision. With no off-the-shelf options available, a custom design was essential to ensure safe and efficient movement of contaminated structures and tooling of various sizes.

The Solution:

Unified Engineering developed a robust prototype vault transfer skid tailored to the unique demands of nuclear reactor environments. Designed for a maximum load capacity of 18,000 lbs., the skid incorporates features such as a customizable top plate to accommodate flasks of different weights and sizes. Equipped with dual steering mechanisms—a Power Pusher attachment and a manual T-Handle—it enables tighter turning radii and precise maneuverability. Engineered to traverse obstacles like straight ledges up to 3/8″ in height and navigate sharp angles up to 66°, the skid ensures seamless transportation even in the most constrained spaces.
