This process poses significant challenges in ensuring safety, secure storage, and efficient transportation, all within stringent operational constraints.

The Solution:

Unified Engineering developed a radiation shielding lifting device designed to address these challenges. The solution features a shielded all-steel cylinder with 5-5/8” thick walls, reducing radiation doses from Cobalt-60 sources by 99%. Incorporating ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles, the device minimizes Bremsstrahlung radiation through innovative gate design and the elimination of air gaps. The system includes a worm gear hand winch for precise handling, a gate for long-reach tool use, and a robust support structure that facilitates safe lifting and transportation. Unified Engineering collaborated closely with a nuclear engineering firm, analyzing operations, conducting shielding calculations, and optimizing the design for safety, efficiency, and manufacturability.
